- Spouses and Partners: Non-Ukrainian spouses, civil partners, and long-term unmarried partners of Ukrainian nationals are eligible for the same visa rights.
- Dependents: Children under 18 and certain adult dependent relatives of Ukrainian nationals can also apply.
- Benefits: These visas grant holders the right to live, work, and access public services in the UK for a specified period, often without the fees associated with standard work or family visas.
Statistical Overview
- Global Reach: While the vast majority of applicants are Ukrainian, the Home Office has processed successful applications from a diverse range of nations, including Nigeria, India, Pakistan, Brazil, and China.
- Volume: Out of the hundreds of thousands who have arrived since 2022, a significant minority—several thousand—fall into these non-Ukrainian “family member” categories.
Policy Adjustments and Closures
Following internal reviews regarding the breadth of these routes, the UK government has introduced several restrictions to tighten eligibility:
- Closure of the Family Scheme: The Ukraine Family Scheme was officially closed to new applicants in February 2024.
- Shortened Residency: The duration of stay for new arrivals under the Homes for Ukraine scheme was reduced from 36 months to 18 months.
- Stricter Sponsorship: Sponsors must now be British or Irish citizens, or individuals with “settled status,” to prevent the system from being used as a chain-migration tool by temporary residents.
Current Status: While the “loophole” has been narrowed by these policy changes, those already in the UK under these schemes remain eligible for the Ukraine Permission Extension, allowing them to extend their stay as the geopolitical situation remains unresolved.
